Petroleum field trips and other resources

Inside Education works collaboratively with partners to provide relevant and scientifically-sound learning experiences that demonstrate the relationship between a healthy environment and a productive economy for educators, students and the public.

Inside Education has created a new series of Petroleum Field Trips, in part funded by the Centre for Energy. Hosts Emily and Kristof take you along as they follow a seismic crew, rig up a well, visit a petrochemical plant and learn about the refinery process. This free DVD series of mini-field trips explores the processes of petroleum. Grade 7 and 8 Science. Copies of these Field Trips may be obtained from Inside Education. Email: info@insideeducation.ca. Petroleum Field Trip 1
Formation and Exploration
It's like looking for buried treasure. Get into the vibe as you travel along with a seismic crew as they stomp the ground and help decide where to drill. Find out how oil and natural gas was formed in Alberta and how we find it today.
Petroleum Field Trip 2
Drilling and Containment
You'll watch a crew 'rigging up'. And visit the mud mixing shack and the shale shaker. Once you hit oil, you'll watch a crew complete a well, hook up a pump and get the oil flowing. Drill deep into this topic.
Petroleum Field Trip 3
Natural Gas
You'll go inside a pipe with a 'smart pig'. And learn how natural gas gets pushed across the country - from Alberta to Ontario - in about a week. Travel from a wellhead to a home to a petrochemical plant.
Petroleum Field Trip 4
Conventional Oil
You'll start out crude and end up refined. And discover that oil moves at 'walking pace' inside a pipeline and can be in the line for over a month if it has a long way to travel. Learn about the refinery process.
